What root canal treatment involves

When decay or injury reaches the soft tissue inside a tooth, that tissue can become infected and painful. In a root canal we clear the infected tissue from inside the tooth, clean and shape the space, and seal it. The outside of the tooth stays where it is, which is why we prefer a root canal to taking the tooth out. We usually cover the tooth with a crown afterwards to protect it.

What happens at the appointment

We examine the tooth and usually take an X-ray so that we can see the root.

We numb the area before we begin any work.

We clean, shape and seal the inside of the tooth, sometimes across more than one appointment.

We plan a crown or filling to restore the shape and strength of the tooth.

Afterwards

The tooth and the gum around it may feel tender for a few days. We will talk you through eating, pain relief and when to come back so that we can restore the tooth.
