What scaling and polishing involves
Plaque that is not removed hardens into tartar, which sticks to the tooth and irritates the gum. Brushing will not remove it. Scaling lifts that deposit away, above and just below the gumline, and polishing then smooths the surface and reduces everyday staining from tea, coffee and tobacco. For most people this is the appointment that keeps the bigger treatments away.
What happens at the appointment
We check your teeth and gums, including anywhere that is bleeding or building up deposit.
We scale the tooth surfaces to remove hardened deposit.
We polish the surfaces to leave them smooth and clean.
We talk through brushing, cleaning between your teeth, and when to come back.
Afterwards
Your teeth can feel slightly sensitive for a day or two, and gums that were already inflamed may be tender. This usually settles quickly.
